The Colleagues

How The Colleagues Production team went from zero to producing for multi-platinum artists.

Its Saturday April 2nd and my team and I are headed to the studio to work with The Colleagues production team. There are two huge final four games going on but the music is calling! This meeting has been a year in the making–in the past we’ve worked via email and phone, writing R&B, Pop, and Hip hop records for them, they also got us our first situation in Korea on the K-Pop scene. Simply put, we make dope records whenever we collaborate!

The ColleageusXSpacesuitXChrisBoyd
The ColleageusXSpacesuitXChrisBoyd

In the studio the vibe was undeniable! We played some of our new records for them–and they did the same. You can always tell it’s a smash when everyone in the room has that ugly, disgusted face while bobbin’ their head lol! After our session I got a chance to really chop it up with them about their situation and what got them to this point in the game.

How The Colleagues Production team went from zero to producing for multi-platinum artists.

Rewind: Let me give you a little background on The Colleagues team. They were founded in 2008 by KP (Karl Powell) later that year they got their first placement with Pastor Troy, the climb has been steady upward ever since!

Currently their production catalog includes: 2 Chainz, Nipsey Hussle, T-Pain, Plies, Raheem Devaughn, Gucci Mane, MGK and more… They had to bust their ass to get here–There were no handouts given.

During our conversation I asked KP what was the main thing that kept them driven even before any success came to fruition. He said “I’ve always seen success honestly–I break everything down to small itsy bitsy goals–that way i’m always productive and always accomplishing something.” In my opinion this is the best way to accomplish a task, I also discuss this in my goal setting audios.

Along with goals, KP also finds himself listening to Steve Harvey every morning just to hear what type of things the mogul talks about during his positive speech. Its common for successful people to fill their mind up with dope positive vibes before they get into the hustle and bustle (I made that word up) of the day.

Being grateful for your current situation has always been the way KP of The Colleagues operates, it kept him optimistic when things were slow. He reflected on a time when he used to send records to some of the top tastemakers and didn’t receive any love.

However, he always remained confident in his ability and knew that he would accomplish the things he set out to. Nowadays those same taste makers are not only showing him love, but also working hand in hand with he and his team.

The Colleagues Production Team
The Colleagues Production Team

One thing that separates those that are successful from those that stop chasing a dream is the “Go Getter Mentality”. Take action and own your shit! Anyone can start somethin’–But do you have the confidence to keep going if things don’t work out immediately?

The power of relationships is what allowed the squad to get their foot on the doorstep of many great opportunities. KP stressed this when we spoke–he is not afraid of traveling to build a stronger bond with individuals that add value to their team. Do not let opportunities pass you by. If you are blessed with the opportunity to travel–do it! This is what has aided in the success of the colleagues and many others.

These are the type of people I keep in my circle, people that motivate and inspire me. Keep these same people in your circle and let The Colleagues story inspire you.

Be sure to check them out at www.producedbythecolleagues.com Trust me they are far from done and we have some things brewing with them. Stay tuned… Peace and Love!

What we can learn from Ryan Coogler’s Success

Your passion might need an awakening: What we can learn from Ryan Coogler’s Success

The success of Ryan Coogler is dope AF, like for real dope! At the age of 29 he’s already achieved the type of success that many directors dream of. Ryan is the director of Fruitvale Station and Creed, he also just inked a deal with Marvel to become the director of the Black Panther franchise. Yall know I like to spotlight successful millennials that are a part of the culture, this is one of the more inspiring stories that I’ve come across. Here is what we can learn from Ryan Coogler’s success He started out with a passion for football and even got a football scholarship, once in college he decided he wanted to become a doctor. That was until a creative writing class changed his path and awakened his true passion.

In the writing class, his professor told the students to write about an emotional time in their life, after writing the paper his teacher was astonished by how good of a writer Ryan was and recommended he go to Hollywood to start writing screenplays. He began studying screenplays, and found his passion.

What we can learn from Ryan Coogler’s Success

This story should be inspiring to everyone. Everyone does not have the same path to success, this story spoke to me because I started out with a passion for basketball and ended up getting a scholarship, only to realize that my true passion was artistic expression, whether it be through music or blogging. Some people are blessed to know exactly what they want to do as soon as they come out the womb, then there’s us, the ones that have tried different things until finally stumbling upon what it is we truly enjoy. So if you’re out there trying to find your passion, it’s out there, just keep searching, most times it will find you. Peace and love!

3 Ways To Dominate 2016

3 Ways To Dominate 2016

If we take a look at the past one thing is clear, those who have taken over a particular year have started early and kept their foot on the gas. Take Future for instance, some say he dominated 2015, whether you agree or not, you have to admit he had the juice! Here are 3 Ways To Dominate 2016.

3 Ways To Dominate 2016

1.Consistency
When you’re consistent you gain momentum. I used Future in the intro so let’s take a look at what set him on fire in 2015. Future was consistent AF!! Future dropped Beast Mode to start the year off, then hit us with 56 Nights, Dirty Sprite 2, and What A Time To Be Alive. Every product he dropped kept the internet on fire. Future went hard and didn’t let up, I read somewhere that he made $200k for an NYE show, that would not have happened a year ago. There is no better time to be consistent than right now, you will be in a totally different space a year from now. Take action and stick to your guns. Whatever drives you is what you should be pushing towards. This is your time to get it!!!

2. No Comfort Zone
Do you ever get the feeling that you would be further in your career if you did one extra thing? It might be something terrifying, but you know deep down it would take you to the next level; Or maybe your just too damn lazy to get it done. Either way, if you want to transcend into a new stratosphere you have to get comfortable being uncomfortable. The more you put yourself out there, the more dope things will happen along your path. You don’t think Drake was uncomfortable when he reached out to ESPN about hosting the ESPYS?! He embraced the challenge and as a result took off to another galaxy. (He hasn’t taken an L since)

3. Don’t Compare Yourself To Everyone Else
I’m going to be blunt here. NO ONE ELSE MATTERS!!! (Picture me yelling) Your path is your path. The most common road to f#%ing up and losing your confidence is comparing yourself to others. There has been people I used to kick it with in Atlanta that blew up, I often used to compare myself to them and wonder why i’m not at that level. There were also people that I’ve kicked it with that wonder why they aren’t at my level, that’s straight up toxic thinking, everyone has their own journey. Set Goals for YOU, smash em, then do it again. Climb, Grind, Reach, and Repeat! Focus on YOU, then look back at all the dope things you’ve accomplished in 2016. Use these 3 Ways to dominate 2016 The Time is Now! 2016 is going to be LIT!!!!

3 Ways DJ Skee Used His Passion To Create More Revenue Streams

3 Ways DJ Skee Used His Passion To Create More Revenue Streams

DJ Skee is well known in the hiphop game, he has been grinding for years to get to his current point. Although he got his foot in the industry by djing for years he is now at the forefront of pop culture. Skee has been recognized by Forbes and Billboard Magazine as one of the most influential figures in today’s entertainment business. It all started by following his passion. Ya boy is makin’ boss moves out here.

My team has actually had the opportunity to work with Skee and Skee TV, we were given some licensing opportunities from him and his team, and have had some of our music featured on Skee TV’s broadcasts like this one for the Games 33rd Birthday party —>

3 Ways DJ Skee used his passion to create more revenue streams

Dash Radio
Through his platform he founded the biggest, all original digital, broadcast platform in the world, Dash Radio. Dash Radio came about due to DJ Skee’s many connections in the game. Relationships are key in any business you want to become a success in.

Tradition
DJ Skee is also owner of two clothing stores in the LA area called “Tradition”. I got a chance to check it out earlier this year when I was in LA for Grammy week, (Slight flex lol) and they have a lot of high end urban wear that is not only dope but also pricey. (Cha Ching $$$)

Digital Marketing
Through his love for music Skee was able to showcase his digital marketing ability. He is responsible for T-Mobile, Google Android, and The Chrysler 300 marketing campaigns. Skee is a wise man, he understands that multiple streams of revenue are important.

I tune into Skee often because he always has words of wisdom for people hustling to become dope. Being an entertainer makes it even more enjoyable for me, I see the blueprint he has laid out and it is something that can be followed! I recommend you do the same, if you want to stay motivated.

Remember, you have to start somewhere, once you figure out what your dope at create a platform for it, and begin to take the necessary steps to watch it grow. For more on DJ Skee check out his website www.djskee.com

How Karen Civil Leveraged An Internship To Become A Boss

How Karen Civil leveraged an Internship To Become A Boss

how Karen Civil leveraged an internship to become a boss

If you don’t know who Karen Civil is hopefully this article is a good introduction for you. Her story is probably one of the most motivating that I’ve seen. It shows we truly can all be successful if we go hard toward our passion. Karen was an ambitious woman that just went for it, and is now one of the biggest entrepreneurs in the game. In digital branding shes the truth! I look up to her and the moves she made in the industry. On this blog I’ve talked about the path I’ve taken to get to my current position in the music industry and hers started the same way, being an intern…

How Karen Civil leveraged an Internship To Become A Boss

In my opinion the best way to make moves and get close to people in the industry is by interning. Here is how Karen Civil leveraged an internship to become a boss. Karen was an intern at Hot 97 for Funk Flex in the mid 2000’s. Along that journey she began cultivating relationships with the movers and shakers of the industry. She became the go to for Dipset initially, then became an important piece to the Young Money imprint. While Lil Wayne was locked up she was his voice to the world, and was a big reason he stayed relevant during his “vacation”. Since then she has managed numerous artists including Nipsey Hussle, and has had a big influence on his innovative marketing campaigns over the years.(See my past post) Check out her dope breakfast club interview.

The power of interning
Internships are powerful tools that provide valuable experience. You meet people you normally wouldn’t and you see the day to day activities on how things work. There is no short cut when it comes to relationships, they come second to none in entertainment and in any realm of business. If you’ve ever heard someone complaining because they “couldn’t get on”, it is due to not having strong enough relationships to make the play happen.

Internships allow your peers to gain more confidence in what you do. You and the organization your associated with can both win. In entertainment internships can truly change your life, as is the case with Karen Civil, while interning im sure she handled tasks she did not enjoy (like searching for Cambodian breast milk on the streets of NY LOL, not really, you gotta see Dave Chapelle to get that joke!) I used to have to go on food runs in the wee hours of the morning for Young Jezzy. But in the process people took notice of her work ethic and gave her a platform to gradually take on larger tasks and become a boss!

My point is, get yourself an internship if you want to make a lasting impression. Look at how Karen Civil went from an ambitious youngster that had no industry clout to a don dada in the game! This is How Karen Civil leveraged An Internship To Become a Boss. She just released a new book as well available on Amazon “Be You and Live Civil”

5 Ways Successful Moguls Think Similar To One Another

5 Ways Successful Moguls Think Similar To One Another

5 Ways Successful Moguls Think Similar To One Another

Mindset is what separates those that are a success from those that are simply going through the motions. When you believe you’re the shit, you usually manifest a dope life, given you take the necessary action. The moguls we look up to most exhibit many other things that we can incorporate into the way we carry ourselves. Here are 5 Ways Successful Moguls Think Similar To One Another

5 Ways Successful Moguls Think Similar To One Another

1. Get out of comfort zone
We can learn alot from moguls, they take chances. Do you think they were cool being regular? Nah! They took a leap and put themselves out there, whether it was being someones understudy, or creating something no one believed in. These were all things that can take you out of your normal comfort level. Russell Simmons started a record label out of his dorm room with Rick Rubin, at the time forming your own record label was unprecedented. He did the unpopular and made it popular.

2. Learn from failure
If you get tied up in one of your failures it can ruin you forever. Every mogul has taken a loss in some form. That is not what defines them. It is their success and work ethic. Moguls use what some consider failure, and create learning experiences from them. You learn more in failure than you do in success. Wisdom goes a long way! Jay-Z was passed up on by every major label before deciding to start his own with Dame, and Kareem. We all know how that worked out…

3. Have a team of smart people
Moguls always have a team of individuals around them that are smarter and more experienced in certain areas than themselves. Every successful Mogul you know has people behind the scene getting things done for them. Daymond John has a team of individuals focusing on the daily operations of his business, this allows him to focus on what hes good at, being the face of his brand while providing insane value to the masses!

4. Set Goals
Imagination is important in success, the most successful moguls have a vast one. They see into the future. An artist very close to P Diddy during his rise to the top said that Diddy always envisioned himself in his current position, he knew ultimately where he wanted to end up, from record label to TV network to liquor owner, all of this was planned years before. He took the necessary steps to get there. (No I will not name the artist that I heard this from)

5. Always looking to reinvest
Moguls believe in themselves so much that when they get large sums of money it is reinvested into their vision. They are smart with their financial decisions, this is why they are still relevant to this day. Diddy bought Revolt for close to $100 Million ( I dont have the exact number and he partner with a private investment firm), Jay Z bought Tidal for $56 Million. The list goes on and on. Be confident in your moves!

Overall the 5 Ways Successful Moguls Think Similar To One Another are things we can use to model ourselves after. There is room for more moguls in this game, both men and women, lets be trailblazers and aim to have people talk about our accomplishments for years to come…

5 Moves DJ Khaled Made To Increase His Longevity

5 Moves DJ Khaled Made To Increase His Longevity

5 Moves DJ Khaled Made To Increase His Longevity

We all know DJ Khaled. How could you not? Those “We Da Best” chants in every record become memorable and that’s the point. Khaled has carved out a very dope career for himself. He just dropped his 7th studio album and has experienced a very high level of success. Khaled has sold millions of records and has been able to add value to his brand year after year. Here are 5 Moves DJ Khaled Made To Increase His Longevity

5 Moves DJ Khaled Made To Increase His Longevity

Carved out his own lane
He took his following as a radio DJ and used it to create a unique space that only he can exist in. Khaled is unlike anyone I’ve ever seen as a DJ. Sure DJ’s release projects, but not like Khaled. Everything he releases is an event! His electric personality makes everyone feel the need to buy what he’s selling. He is involved in the whole album making process and is sure to have his brand all over the net. He uses social media to his advantage.

Stayed Consistent
This is the most important aspect of his success. A major part of building your brand is consistency. Every year Khaled has delivered solid album. Not only that, but every album has great singles and feature the biggest artists in the game. This adds to the allure of his product.

Created Memorable Content
Everything Khaled does is memorable lol! His slogans like “You Smart”, “I Changed, A Lot”, and of course “We Da Best” are all meme worthy and quotable. His charisma gets it done every time. He is one of the more entertaining figures in the culture. Peep The Breakfast Club Interview below.

Teamed up with Winners (Power Circle)
When other people genuinely like you its a lot easier to do business. Khaled’s relationships within the industry have allowed him to get the best possible acts for his projects. It seems as if he’s cool with everyone (May or may not be true). Plus hes a part of one of the biggest teams in the game.

Belief In Persistence
In The Breakfast Club above he talked about the importance of being persistent. This is why it seems he is always able to win. He never lets a “No” deter him from getting to success. Even if someone ignores his request he does not hold grudges, he continues to plug away until the desired collaboration comes to fruition.

Khaled is also involved in various business ventures including his new restaurant “FingaLicking”, which is not one of the 5 Moves DJ Khaled Made To Increase His Longevity that I went over but it could have been. I’ll save that post for another day… Let this be a lesson to those concerned with building your brand, there is not one set way to do things, but if you follow the path that has been paved you might find yourself shouting “We Da Best” too.

Why Be A Solution When You Can Be A Problem

Why Be A Solution When You Can Be A Problem

We A Problem is not just another brand or nifty catchphrase, it’s a lifestyle the creators of this movement use as an outlet to express creativity through artists, music, clothing, and most recently, fitness. We A Problem is collectively making moves as they continue to build their monopoly of brands.

The unit came through with their top artists, Ya Boy Skolla and Ladi G, to rep their “We A Problem” clothing line at MJQ, a popular Atlanta nightclub, that welcomes the eccentric, edgy and innovative free spirits that want to create the world of tomorrow, simply by being who they are and encouraging others to do the same.

Ashley Beaman and the We A Problem crew

According to The Next Phase Entertainment LLC’s CEO DJ Reality, one of their popular tagline’s, “Fuck the Solution, We A Problem,” says it all, “Everybody is so busy trying to conform to what society says we need to do, but you don’t need a solution to everything. Be that outside of the box thought process that makes your own lane.”

With fitness being the latest brand being added just over a year ago, We A Problem has taken their own advice to think outside of the box. “I immediately let it be known, guys if we’re going to have our own clothing we all have to get in better shape,” says We A Problem’s very own fitness specialist, Nephew Da Don. He took it upon himself to train his “family,” and rather than branching off with a separate brand he decided to create the Problem Fitness brand.

Outside of fitness, Nephew is also in charge of photography and graphics, so it’s obvious that his mission is to make sure the We A Problem family is looking good and feeling great. The team has currently released the new logo for the fitness brand, and is in the process of developing a new website to promote their future fitness videos and gear.
